When you believe something for most of your life, it can be very hard to eventually realize it isn’t true.
How do you reject the lifestyle you knew for so long, and suddenly start believing in something different?

Believing the Lies

Fidelina is from a Dominican Republic community where witchcraft is very common. She was surrounded by a culture that emphasized the need for witch doctors to heal sickness and solve other problems, so she thought this was the truth.

Fidelina has six children; she began visiting a witch doctor during her first pregnancy, and kept going ever since. She had been told that other witches would eat the unborn child she was carrying, and believed that regular visits to the witch doctor would keep her and the baby safe from this fate.

Her family’s meager income was spent on these visits, as well as on lottery tickets that the witches told her to buy. They claimed to be providing her with the winning numbers, but the tickets never resulted in a win — the only thing they got her was a serious gambling addiction.

Through her involvement in Food for the Hungry‘s child sponsorship program, Fidelina’s oldest daughter learned about Jesus. Two years ago, she accepted him as her savior, as did Fidelina’s husband Lucio! They both tried to share the Gospel with Fidelina, but she resisted it for a long time. She was set in her ways and habits — why would she change them now?

A Newfound Hope

Then one day, after Fidelina angrily ended a conversation with Lucio about the Gospel, she fell asleep and had a meaningful dream. She dreamed that Lucio was an angel, holding her hand and guiding her. The next day, she went with Lucio to church, and she realized God was trying to reach out to her through this vision. She finally decided to give her life to Jesus!

Today, Fidelina is a different person than she used to be. She no longer believes in witch doctors to heal her children, or witches to help with life circumstances. She knows to find her hope and security in God, and knows that hospitals are the best place to take sick children. Fidelina is also now a leader in her community, teaching other mothers about hygiene, health, nutrition, and the Gospel.

Fidelina says, “It hurts when I think about the time and money that I wasted with witches, that money I could have used to improve my children’s life. But I thank God that now I’m out of all that.”

Fidelina is now being used to help transform her community, all because of her daughter, who God reached through the FH’s child sponsorship program. To help support this program, please consider sponsoring a child today.
