If you’re anything like me, you tell your children “anything is possible.” Not only do I want my children to believe that, I want to be able to help them prove to themselves that it’s true.

Maybe you went to a graduation ceremony in the past few weeks. My kids aren’t graduation age yet, but I saw snippets of graduation ceremonies on TV. The speakers told their bright-eyed audiences that they can become anything they set their minds to. The adults in my life taught me that, and I’m teaching my kids that.

Everything we say to our children, everything we think about them, everything we do for them, is centered on one unquenchable energy source: hope.

But for millions of parents, there is no such thing. They are trapped in poverty, and they see no way out. The heart of their worldview is something you and I can hardly imagine: It will always be like this.

In my recent trip to Nicaragua, I saw how generation after generation, families have staggered from harvest to harvest, desperate to gather enough food to stay alive … enough to keep the children from getting sick … to keep them in school … to give them at least a fighting chance.

But then comes a bad year — a worse-than-usual year — with less rain, with more brutal heat, with terrible crop yields.

And the food runs out.

The seeds for next season’s planting are all that’s left to eat.

The choices are horrible. Eat now, go hungry later … or go hungry now, and maybe there will be food five months from now.

Hope isn’t even part of the equation.
